By August, 17.5 million Italians will be on vacation, and 4.7 million will be in September. However, almost one adult in two (48.5%) will not take any vacation during the summer period. In fact, 24.2 million people will spend the holiday period without moving from their own city or their own home. They are defined as “stay-cationists,” a neologism coined by reworking the English term “Staycation,” a fusion of stay and vacation. This emerges from a survey conducted by Tecnè for Federalberghi.

The family economic situation weighs the most, indicated by 52.8% of respondents as the main reason for giving up. This is followed by organizational difficulties in the family (25.7%) and health reasons (24.5%). 11.2% had to deal with price increases, while 10.4% were influenced by work commitments. Finally, 6.6% do not give up the vacation but will move it to another time of the year. The research therefore confirms that missing a vacation is above all a social issue.
What for decades has been a fixed appointment on the calendar is once again perceived by many as an expense on which they are forced to economize.

The generational gap is also striking: the first to give up vacation are the older people (over 65) and retirees, categories in which the percentage of those who stay home all summer rises to 67%. The most popular activity for those who will not take vacations remains the classic walk, chosen by 33.8% of those who responded to the survey.
Furthermore, to combat the heat, 22.1% will seek refreshment in water: among these, 12.4% will swim in the sea, lake, river, or pool, while 9.7% will limit themselves to enjoying the aquatic environment without immersing themselves. Social occasions are not lacking: evenings with friends (21.7%), visits to relatives (9.8%), aperitifs (9.2%), nights at the disco (6.0%), and lunches or dinners at the restaurant (4.4%) will be the ways chosen to strengthen emotional bonds during the summer. A portion of summer free time will also be dedicated to culture: 10.5% will attend musical performances, while 5.3% will devote themselves to traditional and folkloric events.
