Fit-Cisl and TDS, the most representative maritime workers’ union in Turkey, have signed a cooperation agreement to protect maritime workers. Just transition, digitalization, artificial intelligence, and, last but not least, ongoing armed conflicts are some of the topics addressed in the agreement. Fit-Cisl emphasizes that maritime transport is the driving force of global logistics and the true backbone of world trade, with about 90% of goods traveling by sea and over 12.7 billion tons handled each year.

The agreement marks the beginning of a cooperation path aimed at defending and protecting the legitimate interests of maritime workers and commits the two trade union organizations to strengthen mutual relations, exchange good practices, joint studies and research, also through periodic meetings between the parties. It also provides for a regular exchange of information as well as a commitment to mutual assistance and solidarity in case of disputes with employers and the mutual availability of their premises and logistical resources for holding meetings and joint projects.

Monica Mascia – gains greater value in light of the ongoing transformations in the sector, also marked by current geopolitical instability, which require a united response from the trade unions, shared also with international organizations in the transport sector, particularly ETF (European Transport Workers’ Federation) and ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation), with whom there is the goal of developing further joint initiatives. In this perspective, it is essential to promote agreements among unions from all countries, to ensure the application of contracts, defend common standards, and protect the rights of workers at sea. The agreement with the Turkish union TDS confirms our willingness to build solid and lasting alliances: a replicable agreement, which can also be signed by other trade union organizations and updated over time, to keep pace with the evolution of the maritime labor world.»
