In 2027, the car tax will not be paid for small and medium cars up to 80 kW and for all motorcycles and mopeds. This is what emerges from the draft decree under examination in the Council of Ministers this afternoon, Wednesday, September 16. The tax exemption concerns the payment period between January 1 and December 31 of next year, 2027. The measure is worth 2,362 million euros.

«For cars, the exemption applies to individuals who, in the year 2027, are liable for the car tax for one or more cars powered, even in combination with another propulsion source, by petrol or diesel, having power not exceeding 80 kW. If there are multiple eligible cars, the exemption is granted with reference to only one of them and is applied to the car with the lowest power, expressed in kW. In case of equal power, the exemption is applied to the car for which the amount of car tax due, in the absence of the exemption, is the lowest», it reads.
The cars that may qualify
The 80 kW threshold includes many city cars and small cars. Among the models that have versions with power within the limit are Fiat Pandina, Dacia Sandero, Citroën C3, Toyota Yaris, Renault Clio, Volkswagen Polo, Seat Ibiza, Peugeot 208, Opel Corsa, Hyundai i20, and Lancia Ypsilon. Some crossovers may also qualify: for example, versions of the Jeep Avenger. However, it is necessary to check the individual trim and verify the engine displacement/power in the registration document.
Motorcycles
«For motorcycles and mopeds, the exemption applies to individuals who, in the year 2027, are liable for the car tax or circulation tax for one or more motorcycles or mopeds powered, even in combination with another propulsion source, by petrol or diesel, provided that they are not liable for the car tax for any car with power equal to or less than 80 kW – the text states – If there are multiple eligible motorcycles, the exemption is granted with reference to only one of them and is applied to the motorcycle with the lowest power, expressed in kW. In case of equal power, the exemption is applied to the motorcycle for which the amount of car tax due, in the absence of the exemption, is the lowest. If there are multiple eligible mopeds, the exemption is granted to the moped with the oldest first registration date».

Structural abolition in the Budget
For now, it only applies for one year, but the car tax cut will be structural. This is what government sources explain after the approval of the decree in the Council of Ministers. It is emphasized that the decree law can only provide emergency measures, and for this reason, the period from January 1 to December 31, 2027, was indicated, but the measure will be confirmed and stabilized in the next Budget law.
