Tuscany is experiencing the fourth heatwave of a particularly unusual summer period due to the persistence of high temperatures, as explained by the Lamma Consortium. «A succession of closely spaced hot phases that, for many people, was not perceived as a series of distinct waves precisely because of the short breaks between one episode and another, often without a real return to cool conditions». But when will a bit of “cool” arrive? Patience is needed.

The temperature chart
The chart (above), referring to the city of Florence, shows the trend of maximum temperatures and highlights the days when values were above average. The red area represents the hottest days compared to the reference period, while the gray area indicates normal climate variability: when temperatures exceed this range as well, the heat takes on exceptional characteristics.
What makes these waves exceptional
The first wave occurred in the third decade of May, followed by a second phase starting from mid-June and a third in the middle of July. The current fourth wave began in the last days of July and is continuing these days.
«What makes this summer particularly significant – Lamma explains further – is not so much individual record values, but especially the duration of intense heat conditions. Even during periods of relative easing, in fact, temperatures often remained above average or at least close to typical values for the period, without guaranteeing a real recovery from the heat».
Will it cool down? The forecast
According to the expected trend, for Lamma no significant changes are expected until Ferragosto: the situation will remain characterized by high temperatures and stable conditions. In the following days, a temperature drop could arrive, but at the moment the evolution still carries a high degree of uncertainty.
