While fuel prices continue to rise, the government is considering the introduction of a one-time bonus of 100 euros aimed at employees and self-employed workers. The measure, as reported by La Repubblica, could be part of the new package of interventions that the executive will have to define in the coming days, as the deadline for the current reduction of excise duties on diesel approaches. The fuel discount is expected to end next Thursday and, barring new decisions, it should not be further extended.

The coverage issue
The choice on new support will depend mainly on the available resources. An important step will be represented by the Istat update on public accounts, expected on September 22, which could provide the government with a more precise picture of the financial margins available.
The issue remains that of coverage. The potential cost of the bonus could indeed increase significantly if the number of beneficiaries were to be extended to a large number of workers.
Targeted aid for low incomes and workers
For weeks the executive has been talking about the need to introduce more selective measures, focusing resources on the categories most exposed to rising costs.
Among the possible recipients of the interventions are people with lower incomes, companies in the road transport sector, and workers who use cars for professional reasons.
The hypothesis of the 100-euro bonus fits precisely into this framework of targeted support, although methods, requirements, and the audience are not yet definitive.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, after last Thursday’s Council of Ministers which extended the discount until September 17, assured that “new measures” on fuels are “coming next week.” The Prime Minister then promised “an easy, immediate measure for citizens that does not create confusion,” expressing optimism that by early next week, or at the latest during the next week, “we will come with the measure.”
The government buys time on the new package
A first announcement on the new measures was expected last week, coinciding with the deadline for the last intervention on diesel prices.
However, the executive chose to postpone the decision, meanwhile extending the excise discount until next Thursday. Next week could therefore be decisive to understand if the 100-euro bonus will actually become operational and, above all, what the requirements to obtain it will be.
The latest surveys
Today, Sunday, September 13, the average price of fuels in “self-service” mode along the national road network is 2.105 euros per liter for gasoline and 2.214 euros per liter for diesel. On the motorway network, instead, the average self price is 2.198 euros per liter for gasoline and 2.292 euros per liter for diesel. This is reported by the Ministry of Enterprises, based on the latest data collected by the Fuel Price Observatory of Mimit.
