The man brutally injured during a robbery at the Palmiro Togliatti station, in Rome, did not make it. After eight days of desperate struggle, he died at the Policlinico Umberto I, where he had been hospitalized in very serious condition. The victim, an Egyptian citizen, had intervened to defend a friend attacked by a robber armed with a screwdriver.

The assault and the rush to the hospital
On the evening of July 18, the victim was near the Togliatti station when he saw a man threatening an acquaintance, demanding money and wallet. Upon refusal, the robber – a Gambian citizen – began hitting the unfortunate man with kicks, punches, and screwdriver blows to the arms and legs. The Egyptian citizen intervened to defend his friend but was struck on the head, causing devastating injuries. Once on the ground, the attacker continued to beat him and took his wallet before attempting to flee.
The arrest and the charge now becoming murder
The robber’s escape was short-lived: agents from the Prenestino District and the Polfer tracked him down and arrested him with the initial charge of attempted murder. With the victim’s death, the Rome Prosecutor’s Office updated the charge: the man will now face murder charges. The judge has already ordered preventive detention in prison, and his situation is further worsening.

The call for more security in stations
The incident has reignited the debate on security in metro stations. The Roman secretary of Azione, Alessio D’Amato, together with city councilors Flavia De Gregorio and Antonio De Santis, emphasized how the episode confirms the need to strengthen controls, especially at peripheral stops. According to them, despite the arrest of the perpetrator, the assault shows that current measures are insufficient and that the presence of Polmetro needs to be reinforced, as promised by Minister Piantedosi.
