Today, at 51 years old, after a long illness, Carola Frediani, journalist, author, and one of the most authoritative Italian voices on the topics of cybersecurity, surveillance, cybercrime, privacy, digital rights, and the geopolitics of the Internet, passed away. She is survived by her recently married husband Luca and a 17-year-old son. Her newsletter’s website “Guerre di rete” announced: «Carola was the soul and lifeblood of Guerre di Rete and leaves an unfillable void in all who knew her over the years», reads a post.

A journalist capable of narrating technology without reducing it to technical reporting, and then a professional directly involved in cybersecurity applied to the protection of activists, journalists, organizations, and individuals exposed to concrete digital risks. She graduated in Literature from the University of Genoa and earned a master’s degree in Italian Literature from the University of Pittsburgh. Her career began at the journalistic and multimedia agency Totem. In 2010, she co-founded, with other colleagues, the journalistic agency Effecinque. Subsequently, she worked at ”La Stampa”, where she first dealt with social media, contributing to the creation of the first internal team dedicated to platform management, as stated in an
article dedicated to her on the newspaper’s homepage, and later she was part of the Investigations team.
“Guerre di Rete”
In 2018, she founded ”Guerre di Rete”, a newsletter launched in the same year as the book of the same name. The project established itself as one of the most followed and reliable Italian sources for understanding cybersecurity, cybercrime, cyberespionage, surveillance, artificial intelligence, Internet politics, and digital rights, often with a geopolitical perspective. She worked in the global security team of the International Secretariat of Amnesty International and later in the global cybersecurity department of Human Rights Watch. Frediani wrote for numerous national and international publications, including ”Wired”, ”L’Espresso”, Agi, and ”Vice”. Her books include ”Dentro Anonymous”, ”Deep Web”, ”Guerre di Rete”, and ”#Cybercrime”. More recently, she published ”L’inganno dell’automa”, released in 2025, dedicated to the relationship between artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and the imaginary of automation. In 2021, she received the Arrigo Benedetti Journalism Award and in 2019 the Galilei Award for scientific dissemination.
