For the general public, he was Dr. Alan Grant in the ‘Jurassic Park’ film series, but actor Sam Neill, who passed away today in Australia at the age of 78, was also one of the most popular faces of the 1990s, starring in blockbusters as well as auteur films. As announced by his family in a statement, Neill’s passing was “sudden and unexpected.”
The illness
“Sam was surrounded by family and passed away with the dignity that characterized his entire life,” the statement reads. However, the conditions of the New Zealand actor – born in Omagh, Northern Ireland, to a New Zealand military father and an English mother – had been difficult for some time: Neill himself revealed in a 2023 autobiography that he was “at death’s door” due to stage three non-Hodgkin lymphoma. However, in recent months he had declared that he was cured thanks to a gene therapy that had modified his immune system, and the family also explained that Neill was “cancer-free,” although still receiving treatment at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney.
The career
Neill’s acting career began in the 1970s and spanned dozens of roles on television and in film, including “Peaky Blinders,” “The Hunt for Red October,” and “The Piano.” After classical studies, Neill – graduated in English Literature – began acting in theater, also trying his hand at directing, screenwriting, and editing: in fact, his career included work as a director and editor of documentaries for the New Zealand National Film Unit. In 1981, his first major role came as the male lead in Possession, directed by Andrzej Żuławski, alongside Isabelle Adjani.

In the 1980s, he received various awards, including the 1989 Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor for ‘A Cry in the Dark’ by Fred Schepisi. But it was in the 1990s that Neill’s career took off globally with The Hunt for Red October (1990) by John McTiernan, The Piano (1993) by Jane Campion, In the Mouth of Madness (1994), and especially his role in the Jurassic Park series, whose first installment was in 1993. Alongside his acting career, Neill – two marriages, two children, and since 1991 an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) – had cultivated a passion for winemaking, with vineyards in the Central Otago region on New Zealand’s South Island.
