Very hot and muggy morning in Tuscany, affected by the pre-frontal sirocco wind that precedes the severe weather deterioration expected in the coming hours. The bad weather phase will mainly develop in two moments, as explained by the Centro Meteo Toscana.
First phase: thunderstorms between Massa-Carrara and Lucca
The first phase is expected between late afternoon today, Thursday, August 20, and the early hours of the night, when thunderstorms of strong intensity could develop between the provinces of Massa-Carrara and Lucca.
“The main risk is related to the possible formation of stationary thunderstorms, capable of causing locally very heavy rainfall, with totals that could reach 100 millimeters,” explain the Cmt.
The precise location of the phenomena remains uncertain. However, the first thunderstorms already present in Liguria are a signal to monitor closely and confirm the possibility that this scenario could also materialize in Tuscany.
In the rest of the region, during this first phase, mainly cloudy passages are expected, in a still very muggy context characterized by sirocco winds, especially along the coast.
Second phase: the front crosses Tuscany
The most significant worsening is expected tomorrow morning, Friday, August 21, when an intense thunderstorm system should cross Tuscany from northwest to southeast, approximately between 6 and 10 a.m.
Particular attention will be needed for the wind. The passage of the front could indeed be accompanied by very strong gusts from the northwest, especially along the coast and in the most exposed areas.

Gusts exceeding 100 kilometers per hour during the front’s passage cannot be excluded, with possible criticalities especially in coastal areas.
Heavy rains in Upper Tuscany
From the precipitation point of view, “the largest amounts are once again expected in Upper Tuscany, with possible involvement also of the provinces of Pistoia and Pisa and the northern part of the province of Livorno. A temporary stationary front could cause accumulations between 80 and 100 millimeters in a short time, with locally even higher values,” say the Centro Meteo Toscana.
In the rest of the region, showers should be quicker and less persistent but could be accompanied by locally very violent wind gusts.
Instability also in the afternoon
In the afternoon tomorrow, instability conditions will persist over much of Tuscany, with the possibility of further showers and thunderstorms, especially in the inland areas. The phenomena should, however, be less intense than those associated with the passage of the main front.
Temperatures are expected to drop starting tomorrow morning, precisely following the passage of the disturbance.
