Bad weather returns. And extreme phenomena are on the way. Tuscany is preparing for a new phase of atmospheric instability which, according to regional technicians, will intensify between late Saturday evening, July 25, and Sunday, July 26. The Regional Functional Center has issued an orange alert for strong thunderstorms throughout the region until 2 PM on Sunday, July 26, with a weather outlook that calls for caution, especially in the central-northern areas and along the coastal strip.
The Bulletin
According to the latest bulletin issued by the Functional Center of the Tuscany Region, on the morning of Saturday, July 25, «a low-pressure trough over the Iberian Peninsula activates a flow of Sirocco currents over the central Mediterranean and therefore also over Italy. Associated with this trough is a line of instability that will affect Tuscany from late Saturday evening, July 25, with even strong thunderstorms starting from the north-western areas». The dynamic described by meteorologists confirms the arrival of a disturbed system capable of generating intense phenomena, with sudden and violent rains, wind gusts, and possible hailstorms. A configuration that, as often happens with the Sirocco, will initially affect the north-western exposed areas and then rapidly extend to the rest of the region.

The regional bulletin indicates a clear deterioration already from the early hours of the night between Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, July 26. «From the early hours of next night – the bulletin reads – precipitation, mainly in the form of thunderstorms, even of strong intensity, starting from the north-western areas and extending to the rest of the region between night and early morning». The morning should see a partial attenuation of phenomena, with more marked variability in the north-west and a gradual extension to the rest of Tuscany. In the afternoon, however, the situation will become unstable again: scattered thunderstorms, more frequent in the central-northern areas, could generate new intense downpours. The bulletin indicates significant values: «Average accumulations around 15-20 millimeters, with maximums up to 60-80 millimeters, more probable in the central-northern and southern internal areas. Locally higher maximum accumulations in the north-west and in the Arezzo area, with hourly intensities up to 40-70 millimeters per hour». Numbers that confirm the possibility of localized but very intense episodes, typical of summer thunderstorm structures.

The Region warns that the most critical phase will concentrate between night and early morning. «From the early hours of next night – the bulletin states – possible strong thunderstorms starting from the north-western areas and extending to the rest of the region between night and early morning». In the afternoon, a new resurgence of phenomena could particularly affect the central-northern areas, with the possibility of sudden wind gusts and hailstorms. The bulletin also indicates a strengthening of the wind. «On Sunday, during the night and until early morning, possible wind gusts up to 60-70 km/h». The Sirocco, in addition to favoring instability, will make the sea rough in the southern sectors. «From late this evening, Saturday, and until tomorrow morning, Sunday, sea up to very rough in the southern sectors exposed to the Sirocco». Conditions that could create inconveniences for navigation and port activities, especially along the Grosseto coast and the Archipelago.

With the orange alert active, the regional Civil Protection urges maximum caution: avoid unnecessary travel during the most critical hours, pay attention to underpasses, depressed areas, and minor watercourses, which could react rapidly to the most intense thunderstorms.
