Ended at 2 PM on Sunday, July 26 the orange alert for strong thunderstorms and hydrogeological risk – with widespread inconveniences but fortunately without particularly serious problems –, Tuscany does not completely exit the bad weather phase. The Regional Functional Center has issued a new bulletin that depicts a still dynamic situation, with scattered phenomena that will continue to affect various inland areas and part of the coast in the coming hours. And there is another thunderstorm alert valid for the night and the first part of the day on Monday, July 27.

The Regional Functional Center explains: «On the afternoon of Sunday, July 26 and during the afternoon of Monday, July 27, modest instability with the possibility of scattered or isolated precipitation in the inland areas, generally of brief intensity, also with thunderstorm characteristics. Average accumulations not significant with maximums up to 20-30 millimeters». The weather forecast indicates that, despite the end of the alert, areas far from the coast will remain exposed to intermittent showers. These are brief phenomena, not particularly intense, but sufficient to maintain a level of attention, especially in territories already saturated after the rains of the last 48 hours.
New thunderstorms
Then the Cfr raises attention to what could happen on the night between Sunday and Monday, with reference to a specific area of Tuscany: «On Monday, July 27, overnight and in the morning – the bulletin reads – persistent but very localized showers are not excluded between the central coast and the archipelago with possible maximum accumulations even exceeding 50 millimeters». The bulletin highlights an additional critical issue: between Sunday night and Monday morning, some portions of the central coast and the Tuscan Archipelago could be affected by more persistent and localized precipitation. This is not an widespread phenomenon, but the possibility of accumulations exceeding 50 millimeters in a few hours requires caution, especially in points where water runoff may be slower. Mountain and hilly areas – on Sunday, July 26 – remain the most exposed to the development of sudden thunderstorms. These are typical phenomena of the post-frontal phase, with thunderstorm cells that can form rapidly and discharge intense rain for a few minutes before dissipating.

The danger
Returning instead to the dangers on the night between Sunday, July 26 and Monday, July 27, the Regional Functional Center goes into detail: «On Monday, overnight and in the morning, persistent but very localized thunderstorms are not excluded between the central coast and the archipelago». The Regional Functional Center again emphasizes the most delicate time slot: between Monday night and morning, when the combination of humid air and remnants of the disturbance could generate more lasting, albeit circumscribed, showers. A situation that requires constant monitoring, especially in coastal municipalities and on the islands.
