The situation update in the analysis by Centro Meteo Toscana

3 MINUTES READ

The night between Tuesday 2 and Wednesday June 3 brought Tuscany back into an increasingly frequent scenario: torrential rains, floods, landslides, and a climate alternating between unusual heat and violent thunderstorms. This is confirmed by the Centro Meteo Toscana, which on June 3 released a very clear analysis of the atmospheric situation and the outlook for the coming days.

Climate Extremes

The analysis begins with words that leave no room for interpretation: “Climate extremes mode ‘On’. After the unusual heat of recent days, a change of air arrived thanks to Atlantic infiltrations and, as always, the thunderstorms came that on the evening of Tuesday June 2 first affected the Arezzo area and then during the night all the areas north of the Arno with peaks up to 120/130 millimeters in a few hours.” According to meteorologists, these are exceptional values, well beyond the rain that would normally fall in an entire month of June. Such a concentrated amount of water explains the floods and landslides recorded in various areas of the region.

Warmer sea and extreme storms

Centro Meteo Toscana emphasizes that these episodes are no longer exceptions but part of a new normal: “The new climate is now this: sea constantly warmer than normal, extreme energy and consequently, violent storms.” Experts also recall the damage recorded in recent hours in Northern Italy, where hailstones of 4-5 centimeters and downburst gusts hit from Piedmont to Friuli. Phenomena that, until a few years ago, were considered very rare.

The situation in Tuscany

In our region, precipitation has been very abundant but unevenly distributed, as often happens in summer storms. “In Tuscany, as mentioned, it rained a lot although with the usual big differences between one area and another – explains Centro Meteo – while now the southwest wind is felt along the coast. This situation will accompany us until tomorrow evening with rough or very rough seas.” The southwest wind will therefore continue to blow strongly, making the sea rough and maintaining unstable conditions at least until Thursday evening.

A new front arriving Friday

The worsening is not over. “On the morning of Friday June 5 another Atlantic front will again cross northern Italy and then move more marginally also in Tuscany crossing the region from northwest to southeast. New rains are expected, probably less intense than those witnessed between June 2 and 3.” The region could therefore experience another day of instability, although with less violent phenomena than those just passed.

Cool and then African heat

After the stormy passage, Saturday morning will bring temporary relief: “On the morning of Saturday June 6 a very cool awakening – continues Cmt – with fairly low minimum temperatures. But already from the afternoon and even more from Sunday June 7 temperatures will rise again.” From Sunday, in fact, Tuscany will enter the second wave of African heat of the season, with values returning to reach 34-35 degrees in the following week. The final comment from Centro Meteo Toscana is a bitter summary of the situation: “This is now the new normal.” An increasingly extreme climate, made of sudden swings, violent rains, and close heat waves. A challenge that Tuscany, like the rest of the country, will have to learn to manage with growing attention.
