The countdown has begun. According to the forecasts of the Centro Meteo Toscana, the intense heat phase that has characterized these first days of September is now close to a sudden change.
Before the circulation change, however, there is still a day to recount, that of yesterday (Sunday, September 6), still characterized by exceptionally high temperatures, with new historical September records broken in several Tuscan locations.
The most important record did not fall, that of Florence Peretola, where the thermometer stopped at 37 degrees, against the 38.2 recorded in September 1949. In the more inland city stations, however, 38 degrees were locally reached.
Record temperatures in several locations in Tuscany
The most significant values were also recorded in other areas of the region. In Pontedera, in the province of Pisa, the temperature reached 36 degrees, clearly surpassing the previous September record, set at 34.5 degrees. This is a station with a historical series dating back to 1895.
Record also broken in Montevarchi, in the province of Arezzo, where 37.2 degrees were reached against the previous record of 37, based on data available since 1961.
In Montespertoli, in the Florentine area, the thermometer reached 36.8 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 36.5 degrees, with a historical series starting from 2000.
It is likely that further records have been reached in other locations in the region. A picture that confirms how intense the heat wave that affected Tuscany has been.
The change is now near
The situation, however, is destined to change rapidly. The forecasts of Centro Meteo Toscana indicate the approach of a decidedly more unstable phase, destined to bring rain, thunderstorms, and a sharp drop in temperatures.
Today, Monday the 7th, will still be very hot, but with values lower than those reached yesterday. Maximum temperatures could reach 35-36 degrees, while in the afternoon the first signs of instability will begin to appear on the Apennines and in the areas around Monte Amiata. This would be the first clear sign of the progressive weakening of the anticyclonic structure.

Tuesday still hot and muggy, then thunderstorms increase
Tomorrow, Tuesday the 8th, the heat will remain the protagonist, albeit with a few degrees less, but the increase in humidity will make the air more muggy. During the hottest hours, further unstable phenomena will be possible especially in the inland areas.
The phase of change will become more evident from Wednesday, when afternoon showers and thunderstorms could also affect some internal hilly areas and, locally, the plains, including the Florentine and Prato territories.
From Thursday sharp drop in temperatures
The real turning point, according to Centro Meteo Toscana, is expected from Thursday the 10th. Instability should progressively extend to most of the region, accompanied by a sharp thermal drop, on the order of 8-10 degrees compared to current values.
In the afternoon, numerous thunderstorms could develop over various areas of Tuscany. It will therefore not be a simple cool down, but a significant change in atmospheric circulation.
Friday risk of intense thunderstorms on the coast
Particular attention will be necessary on Friday, when the possible formation of maritime thunderstorms moving from South to North will need to be evaluated.
According to forecasts, these phenomena could cross Tuscany, particularly affecting the coasts, the islands of the Archipelago, and the southern provinces, where the risk of very intense precipitation and possible cloudbursts is not excluded.
Weekend, a more typical September climate arrives
In general, the circulation change should affect not only Tuscany but much of Italy by Saturday. Temperatures will return to values more appropriate for the period, while a rainier phase could affect several regions.
