Summer is extending: 10 million Italians on vacation in September. And Tuscany is the preferred region

Tourism gains a few more days. September confirms itself as a very appreciated month by Italians: 10 million will be ready to spend at least a holiday period in the next month, with an average expenditure of 760 euros.

Sea preferred destination

According to data from the Confturismo/Confcommercio Observatory on the summer of Italians, developed in collaboration with Swg, September holidays come with different durations: 2.8 million Italians plan a short holiday, with 1-2 overnight stays, while 3 million will opt for a stay of 3-5 overnight stays. The rest plan a long holiday, with 7 or more overnight stays. The sea is still the preferred destination, indicated by 41% of travelers, followed by major art cities (26%) and the mountains (18%). 71% will choose a destination in Italy, while 23% will go to another European country and 6% outside Europe.

Tuscany is the most chosen region

Among Italian regions Tuscany ranks first, followed by Campania and Emilia-Romagna. Looking instead at European destinations, the ranking sees Spain at the top, followed by France and Greece. Regarding accommodation facilities, hotels are the main choice (30%), followed by second homes (25%) and B&b (17%). Next are rental homes (11%), farmhouses (6%) and holiday villages or resorts (5%).

Who travels in September

In September, mainly over 55s travel, representing 42% of travelers, followed by young people (35%) and the 35-54 age group. The propensity to travel is higher in the Northwest (41%) and the Center (40%), while it stands at 36% in the Northeast and 35% in the South and Islands. “It is increasingly the climate that influences the holiday calendar of Italians – observes Manfred Pinzger, president of Confturismo Confcommercio -. September, thanks to milder temperatures, less crowding and greater convenience, is becoming a real holiday month. A trend that helps to better distribute tourist flows and extend the season.
