Alessandro Di Battista was hospitalized in Cuba last night, Friday, August 28, in a hospital in Santa Clara, 300 kilometers from Havana. The former deputy of the Five Star Movement reportedly “arrived at the hospital in Cuba in serious condition after experiencing severe headaches and illness.” This afternoon, he is scheduled to be transferred to a hospital facility in Havana.
The M5S: «Great concern»
“Great concern” was expressed in a note from M5S: “The Five Star community has learned of Alessandro Di Battista’s hospitalization in Cuba with great concern. It hopes to receive updates and positive news, standing with his family in this moment of deep worry.”
Di Battista, who works as a journalist with investigations for Fatto Quotidiano, is on the island to produce reports for the newspaper and “Tv Loft.”
Minister Tajani: «In contact with the Embassy, praying for his health»
“Since last night, I have been in contact with the Italian Embassy in Cuba to check on Alessandro Di Battista’s condition, hospitalized for examinations in a hospital in Santa Clara where he was traveling. I pray for his health. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide him and his family with all necessary assistance. I am close to his loved ones and the political community he represents,” wrote Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on social media.

In the latest post published on Facebook, yesterday evening around 10 PM, he wrote: “The terrorist state of Israel continues to simultaneously bomb Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria.” Around 2 AM, he also shared on Instagram a story reposting a video published by Salah Ostaz, a Palestinian journalist and photojournalist operating in the Gaza Strip, documenting an attack against civilians in a location in the northern Strip.
The decision not to run again
Roman, born in 1978, after a degree in Dams and field experience as a cooperative worker in Latin America and Africa, Di Battista entered the orbit of the Five Star Movement at a very young age. Between 2013 and 2018, he served as a deputy, quickly becoming — along with Luigi Di Maio — one of the most influential and charismatic leaders of the Five Star formation. Known for his passionate and uncompromising oratory, conducted from squares, stages, and halls, in 2018 Di Battista made the striking choice not to run again in the political elections to dedicate himself to writing and travel reporting. The definitive break with the M5S occurred in 2021, when he decided to leave the Movement following the M5S’s choice to support the government led by Mario Draghi.
Journalism and social commitment
In the following years, he reinvented his public figure around journalism and social commitment, writing for independent outlets, authoring geopolitical essays, and working on documentaries and podcasts dedicated to the Middle East, Latin America, and the world’s outskirts. In 2023, he founded the cultural and political association Schierarsi, through which he promotes civil battles and opinion campaigns on healthcare, peace, and foreign policy. Between theater and essays, the former parliamentarian continues to analyze international conflicts while maintaining a strongly critical stance towards global power dynamics and mainstream media.
