In Tuscany there are 143 speed cameras that may require additional checks in light of the new decree from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, which came into effect on July 12. The number comes from the national census published by the ministry, which orders the devices based on the date of the approval decree: all those prior to June 13, 2017, the watershed date of the new regulation, automatically come under observation. However, the figure should be interpreted with caution: many of those devices may no longer be active and, above all, the ministry census has gaps that make it difficult to precisely identify the locations.
Incomplete census: why it is difficult to understand which speed cameras are involved
The national map of devices is not homogeneous. Some entities indicated the Municipality, others only the local police command, others the cadastral code. In several cases, essential information such as road, kilometer, or device name is missing. A situation that reflects years of approvals without a uniform technical framework: speed cameras were approved but not certified. The decree tries to bring order, but several interpretative issues remain.
A significant point concerns the initial draft of the decree: it provided for the automatic deactivation of uncertified devices. In the final text, this clause disappeared, opening the way to a possible increase in disputes.
The key date
The new MIT decree introduces for the first time a comprehensive regulation on certification, calibration, and functionality checks of speed control devices. The reference date is June 13, 2017, when the ministerial decree 282 came into force, which defined the approval procedures for speed cameras. Devices approved before that date do not automatically enjoy certification: manufacturers will have to submit a specific request following the new procedure. For those approved afterward, the process is simplified. Certification first defines the technical characteristics and then verifies that the prototype complies; approval evaluates the individual device without prior technical regulation. The new decree aims to fill this gap but leaves many questions open related to ongoing procedures and future disputes.
Distribution of speed cameras in Tuscany
The 143 devices approved before June 13, 2017, are distributed across all provinces. Among the municipalities with the most locations are:

What happens now
The MIT census is only a starting point. For each device it will be necessary to verify:
- technical documentation
- approval decrees
- any updates
- compliance with the new regulation
Only after this work will it be possible to determine which speed cameras can continue to operate without further requirements and which will have to undergo the new procedure provided by the decree.
