Palio di Siena postponed due to bad weather – When it will be run and the favored contrade

SIENA. Now it is official, after the rain the Palio di Siena has been postponed. Around 3:45 PM, in Piazza del Campo, the green flag was displayed from the Town Hall, indicating the postponement of the race. The appointment is therefore set for tomorrow, Monday, August 17, a day for which the weather forecast still predicts rain. There is a risk of further delay, but everything remains to be seen, possibly to Tuesday.

The precedents

In recent editions, postponement has become a classic. Even in the appointment on July 2nd, rain forced a postponement, with the race held the following day, won by the Aquila contrada with the pairing Diodoro and Tittia. The same happened in July 2025 and on both occasions in 2024, with a postponement to the third day as well: July 4 for the triumph of the Onda and August 17 for that of the Lupa. It is the fifth postponement in the last six editions. Only the one on August 16, 2025, was “saved”.

The favored contrade

Great anticipation anyway for a race that promises to be exciting. As mentioned, the weather uncertainty remains. Tomorrow (August 17) sees several Tuscan municipalities on weather alert, though not Siena, but the risk of rain exists. It will be crucial to understand what happens in the morning and early afternoon tomorrow.

Ahead of the race, three contrade are favored: the Lupa with Velluto (Dino Pes) riding Diodoro, fresh from the July 3 victory, the Aquila which triumphed in the Palio di Provenzano: Benitos with Brigante (Carlo Sanna), the pairing dreaming of the “cappotto”. Anyone wanting to win in Piazza del Campo, now a certainty, cannot ignore Giovanni Atzeni called “Tittia”: he will be the one with Anda and Bola trying to take the “cuffia” from Nicchio, which has not won since 1998 and is the “grandmother” of the Palio (the contrada that has gone the longest without winning). The other contrade: Giuseppe Zedde called Gingillo on Donrodrigo for the Torre, Federico Guglielmi called Tamurè on Ares Elce for the Istrice, Sebastiano Murtas called Grandine on Canarinu for the Selva, Michel Putzu called Spago on Diamante Sauro for the Oca, Jonatan Bartoletti called Scompiglio on Arestetulesu for the Chiocciola, Andrea Sanna called Virgola on Viso d’Angelo for the Onda, Elias Mannucci called Turbine on Euskaldi for the Giraffa.
