A terrible discovery. And a horror story still to be deciphered. It all happens at the animal shelter Chico Mendes in Campi Bisenzio, in the province of Florence. Law enforcement has launched an investigation to reconstruct what happened to Muschio, a goat over fifteen years old, long considered one of the symbols of the facility that welcomes animals rescued from exploitation, mistreatment, or abandonment. According to volunteers, the animal had disappeared on Saturday, July 18, without returning to the shelter as he usually did. His absence immediately triggered a general mobilization: appeals on social media, searches in the sixteen hectares of the protected area and surrounding fields, up to the use of a thermal drone to expand the patrols.
A mysterious disappearance and a week of searches
In the first moments, given the goat’s advanced age and the intense heat of those days, volunteers had feared an illness. However, immediate checks had yielded no results. Hence the hypothesis that Muschio might have left the shelter area and that someone had taken him away. Reports received in the following days had not provided useful elements, despite the extended searches. The hope of finding him alive was unfortunately shattered on Saturday, July 25, when the animal’s body was found in a field not far from the shelter.
Torn to pieces and thrown into a pit
The discovery was made by volunteers during yet another search. The goat was found torn to pieces and thrown into a kind of pit in the middle of a field. A scene that left everyone shocked. «We found his body while we were sifting through the surrounding fields for the umpteenth time. Judicial investigations are underway. The municipal police, the carabinieri, and the Municipality of Campi Bisenzio intervened,» the volunteers declared. According to initial observations, there was no blood, but only a very strong smell: a detail that suggests Muschio may have been killed elsewhere and then transported to the discovery site.
Investigations underway and veterinary assessments
To establish the cause of death with certainty, the goat’s remains have been transferred to the Istituto Zooprofilattico del Lazio e della Toscana (Zooprophylactic Institute of Lazio and Tuscany), where a necroscopic examination will be performed. This assessment will clarify whether Muschio was a victim of illness, aggression, or an intentional act. Meanwhile, law enforcement is collecting testimonies and verifying every useful element to reconstruct the dynamics of the animal’s disappearance and death.
A shaken community
The Chico Mendes shelter, known for its commitment to protecting animals rescued from difficult situations, is experiencing hours of great pain. Muschio was considered a life companion, an animal that had won over volunteers and visitors over the years. His loss, and especially the manner in which it occurred, has deeply shaken the entire community.
