Over 21 thousand lightning strikes in six hours in Tuscany. The data is provided by the President of the Region, Eugenio Giani, on a day – today, August 17 – characterized by a yellow alert for thunderstorms affecting much of the territory. This morning, the area most affected was the Livorno coast, but also the island of Elba and Gorgona; then the storms moved inland. However, the critical alert was then extended by the operations room until midnight today across all of Tuscany.

Lightning on the roof
Due to bad weather, there are currently interventions by firefighters in the Livorno area and in Florence. In Rosignano Marittimo, a fire broke out on the roof of a building. According to an initial reconstruction, yet to be confirmed, the fire was caused by a lightning strike. Firefighter teams intervened to contain the flames and control the fire, managing to limit its spread to the remaining part of the roof. No further damage has been reported at this time.
Fallen trees
In Livorno, the storm and strong gusts of wind caused a large branch to fall on Viale Italia. Firefighters cut it into several parts, allowing for its subsequent removal. No damage to people or property has been reported. From the coast to the inland. The bad weather also hit Florence where a tree, a large plane tree, fell on Viale Machiavelli, probably because it was struck by lightning during the storm that hit the Tuscan capital. The road was temporarily closed to allow intervention by firefighters and municipal police, and was reopened after the tree removal operations. No injuries have been reported from the tree fall.
