FLORENCE. The Meyer revolutionizes and reorganizes its spaces. It begins by inaugurating a new Pediatric Medical Center in the east wing of the Hospital to respond to the constant increase in demand from young patients and their families. In recent years, the Aou Meyer Irccs has been called upon to face increasingly complex clinical cases, characterized by high specialization, as reported in a statement. Hence, the need to proceed with a logistical reorganization that allows freeing up the old spaces inside the west wing of the Hospital, making room for new inpatient beds entirely dedicated to the surgery area.
«The good public healthcare we want – explains the president of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani – is not only the one that invests in new technologies, research, and the professionals who work there, to provide increasingly greater and tailored responses to changing health needs. It is also healthcare attentive to logistics and environments that must welcome patients, capable of planning and looking to the future. With this new space, we increase beds and reception areas – he continues –. Meyer confirms itself among the major Irccs at the national level, and we want to maintain this Tuscan excellence at a high level.»
«With this new medical center, Meyer, which is already an excellence, takes a further step forward in the ability to offer timely and cutting-edge care, with multidisciplinary teams, to its young patients, in a welcoming environment,» comments the Tuscany health rights councilor, Monia Monni.
«With the realization of this new structure – explains Federico Gelli, general director of AOU Meyer Irccs – we initiate a complex logistical domino that will allow us to maximize the rationalization of spaces between medical and surgical activities, the resources available, and to provide increasingly timely and efficient responses to the many families who turn to us every year for a health problem of their children and adolescents.»
How it will be organized
The new Medical Center is therefore only the first step of a long journey. The reorganization aims to ensure integration between very high complexity care, clinical-translational research, and innovation, but also to facilitate the delicate transition between the hospital environment and the territory, structurally consolidating the effectiveness of the entire regional pediatric network.
The Medical Center will be open from Monday to Friday, with continuous hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.: during the day, outpatient services, Day Hospital (DH), and Day Service will be provided.
The project included the creation of a reception and orientation area with an admission desk dedicated to the logistical and administrative management of children and parents, with waiting areas designed to ensure comfort and a calm wait, avoiding crowding in the corridors. Dedicated staff, trained to guide users and efficiently facilitate transfers, will be available to patients and their families.

The inpatient area, with a total of 12 beds, includes 8 open-space beds to promote continuous clinical monitoring and maximum organizational efficiency of healthcare staff; 2 isolation boxes dedicated to immunocompromised and high infectious risk patients; a Day Hospital (DH) room with 2 beds, reserved for daytime management of complex patients, to ensure therapies and examinations without resorting to ordinary hospitalization. There will also be two distinct medical rooms, separated to optimize flows and reduce clinical risk: one exclusively dedicated to therapy preparation, while the second will be reserved for clinical procedures (blood draws, sedations, and diagnostic procedures under sedation).
Available to operators and patients, there will also be seven specialist outpatient clinics, fully equipped with new and easily sanitizable furnishings, with cutting-edge healthcare technologies to achieve advanced diagnostic framing already in the early stages of care. The furnishings, purchased with the support of the Meyer Foundation, are mounted on wheels to ensure maximum modularity of spaces, high operational functionality, and total safety for young patients and operators.
The new Medical Center will exponentially enhance the work of multidisciplinary and multispecialist teams, with specialists in various medical fields and nurses and socio-health operators with advanced skills. Beyond the surgical area, the medical area will range from pediatrics to gastroenterology, including hepatology, auxo-endocrinology, and immunology.
Global care (clinical and assistance) is also planned for the so-called “complex children”: pediatric patients with fragility, severe or rare chronic diseases. The Center will also host the reference center for spina bifida, with a highly specialized diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative pathway.
The intervention involves a significant initial economic commitment, structured, however, to generate a strong return in terms of management efficiency and positive externalities for the regional health system. By centralizing very high complexities and enhancing Day Hospital management, the new structure will reduce the fragmentation of spending on peripheral facilities, lower the rate of inappropriate hospitalizations, and maximize the return on health investments for the entire Region.
