Confirmations are coming. The summer could “break”. For weeks Tuscany has been trapped in a phase of intense and prolonged heat, with values in the inland areas repeatedly exceeding 38–40 degrees. A condition that has severely tested citizens, workers, and territories, and which experts say cannot be interrupted “like a switch.” As explained in the latest analysis released on the morning of Tuesday, August 11 by the Centro Meteo Toscana, “we are all exhausted by the heat and can’t wait for at least a few days’ respite, but the atmosphere is not a switch that turns off or on as some think.” The Cmt reminds that atmospheric changes take time and depend on dynamics on a very large scale. However, a change on the horizon is now truly visible. But let’s go in order.
The first signs: the Atlantic flow restarts
After months dominated by a robust North African anticyclone, something seems to be moving. The anomalies present over the Atlantic, which contributed to the meteorological block, are gradually fading. According to the analysis released by Centro Meteo Toscana, “the Atlantic flow is slowly restarting. The anomalies in the middle of the Atlantic are fading, and this means that inevitably, after months of anticyclonic block, something will change.” A sign that, if confirmed, could open the way to greater atmospheric dynamism in the second half of August.
Scorching Ferragosto, then first thunderstorms
Before the change, however, Tuscany will have to face a very intense heat Ferragosto. Projections indicate peaks up to 40–41 degrees in the inland areas, with conditions of severe physical discomfort. Centro Meteo Toscana confirms that “the intense heat will accompany us until Ferragosto,” but already from the following day models show a weakening of the North African ridge. This weakening could favor the formation of the first afternoon thunderstorms between August 16 and 17, especially in the inland and mountainous areas.
The Atlantic trough and the possible thunderstorm “break”
The most significant element of the latest analyses concerns the arrival of an Atlantic trough, which could move from west to east over the Mediterranean, bringing a more organized thunderstorm passage. As reported by the Cmt, “this morning almost all models see a movement from west to east of a first Atlantic trough which, moving over the Mediterranean, can only give rise at least to a thunderstorm passage and a subsequent air exchange.” An exchange that will not mark the end of summer but could guarantee a few days of relief.

What to expect: rain, thunderstorms, and more breathable air
The possible disturbed passage between August 19 and 20 could bring locally heavy rains, depending on the intensity of the thunderstorms. The precise location, as always in these cases, is not yet definable. Centro Meteo Toscana clarifies that “air exchange does not mean the end of summer or the arrival of autumn,” but simply a period with lower temperatures and less oppressive conditions. The dates, for now, remain confirmed: first afternoon thunderstorms between August 16 and 17, more widespread break between the 19th and 20th.
