Ita Airways, from August 3 large dogs will be able to travel in the airplane cabin – How it works

Ita Airways launches the “Large Dog On Board” service, dedicated to the cabin transport of dogs up to 30 kg, without a carrier, on selected national scheduled flights ”Large Dog”. The service, on sale from July 29 and operational from August 3, can be booked through the Customer Information Assistance Office (CIAO) of Ita Airways at least four days before the flight date.

The launch of the service follows the first demonstration scheduled flight carried out last September from Milan Linate to Rome Fiumicino, during which two large dogs traveled in the cabin without a carrier. With the introduction of this service on its flights, ITA Airways becomes a protagonist of another historic moment for Italian commercial aviation, following the authorization received from Enac, the National Civil Aviation Authority, based on the new provisions on the transport of dogs in the cabin adopted by the Authority.

How it works

In this first phase, the Large Dog On Board service will initially be active on selected national flights operated by Ita Airways, respecting the maximum number of Large Dogs transportable based on the authorization granted by ENAC. With the launch of the service, a maximum of two large dogs will be transported in the cabin – in spaces reserved for them – one up to 30 kg in Business class and another up to 15 kg in Economy class. In the first two months from the launch of the service, standard-sized dogs (weighing up to 10 kg) on board will be a maximum of two (only in Economy class and at least eight rows away from the large dogs). Afterwards, the number of standard-sized dogs will increase up to four.

Service on national flights

ITA Airways plans to expand the service on national flights and extend it to international flights, compatibly with the progressive revision of limits and procedures by the competent regulatory bodies. “With the launch of the Large Dog On Board service, ITA Airways takes a concrete step towards a way of traveling increasingly attentive to the needs of its passengers,” says Joerg Eberhart, CEO and General Manager of Ita Airways. “We have listened to our customers’ requests and worked together with Enac, whom I thank, to allow them to share the journey with their four-legged friends, avoiding separations and making the flight experience more serene for the whole family. This result confirms our commitment to promoting innovative, responsible air transport capable of combining customer care, dog welfare, and full compliance with safety requirements.” The sale of the first domestic scheduled flights open to the transport of large dogs represents a significant evolution in the travel experience offered by Ita Airways. The new service confirms the company’s attention to customer needs and its commitment to proposing innovative solutions, fully respecting safety requirements and the welfare of all passengers.
