CIVITAVECCHIA. The port of Civitavecchia is about to meet liquefied natural gas, a substance used for the supply of ships, especially large ones. And the first encounter with LNG is scheduled much sooner than expected, as it has been set for the first days of August.
A preview on this came through an interview with Simone De Marchi, CEO of Axpo Italia, a company that is part of an important Swiss group engaged, among other things, in the LNG and electric storage sectors. De Marchi explained that his company is actively collaborating to introduce Liquefied Natural Gas refueling at the port of Civitavecchia.
The energy group aims to extend its bunkering services, that is, small-scale ship refueling, replicating the model already successfully launched in Genoa and Naples. Specifically, a small vessel containing LNG approaches the ship, particularly cruise ships, and through a connection, unloads the gas into the tank. This is an unprecedented procedure for the local maritime terminal, whose institutions are already working to define the methods of implementation and, above all, to ensure that everything takes place with maximum safety.

The small scale LNG, moreover, does not require expensive port infrastructure or invasive structural interventions. The activity is based on ship-to-ship refueling, that is from ship to ship, and ship-to-truck, from ship to truck. Axpo, in particular, employs a dedicated bunkering vessel of 7,500 cubic meters to refuel ferries and new generation ships.
The environmental benefits are considered significant, since on one hand LNG is a stable molecule that evaporates at room temperature without spills into the sea and on the other it allows the immediate reduction of pollutant emissions inside and near the port terminal. Apparently, the company’s intention is to make the port of Civitavecchia a reference hub for maritime energy transition.
