How he is
The jockey who led the Contrada del Nicchio to victory, 41 years old, arrived at the emergency room conscious on the evening of Tuesday, August 18, and was kept under observation. According to health sources reported to Adnkronos, Atzeni will remain hospitalized in the emergency observation ward for at least another 24 hours. The trauma occurred moments after Nicchio’s victory, when two contradaioli who entered the tufa track in Piazza del Campo to celebrate collided with the horse “Anda e Bola.” A topic, that of celebrations on the track at the end of the palio, which has reignited debate and has caused many controversies in recent hours.
In the impact, Atzeni fell and hit his head, subsequently being assisted by 118 emergency medical personnel and transferred to the hospital. As the Municipality of Siena announced at the end of the event, “the ten horses that ran the Palio all returned regularly to the stables of their respective Contrade.”
The victory, awaited by Nicchio for 28 years, was thus followed by a moment of concern for the jockey’s condition, protagonist of a race that saw him achieve his 13th win, just one away from the historic record of the legendary Andrea Degortes known as Aceto.
The note from the Asl
This morning, August 19, the report from the Asl Toscana sud-est, responsible for the Siena area, also arrived. During the race on August 18, the Operations Center assisted a total of 24 patients, of whom 7 were transported.
“Of the 7 hospitalized patients, 4 were transported as code 1, two patients as code 2 for polytrauma at the end of the race, and the Nicchio jockey as code 3 (thus in red code, editor’s note). The ambulances from the outer ring of Piazza del Campo carried out two interventions within the city walls during the race, thus ensuring daily operational capacity in the Siena area.
At the end of the assistance service, the medical personnel and ambulances from the outer ring were reactivated for two illnesses that occurred in Piazza del Duomo, during the Nicchio people’s jubilation:
- 18-year-old patient, transported as code 2 for trauma
- 53-year-old patient struck by cardiac arrest inside the Duomo, promptly assisted by bystanders with cardiac massage. Upon ambulance arrival, a semi-automatic defibrillator was applied with subsequent rhythm resumption, then transported by 118 doctor and nurse for necessary care.”
