A fire broke out in the early afternoon of Friday, August 14 in the woods surrounding San Donato in Poggio, in the municipal territory of Barberino Tavarnelle (Florence).
The flames
The flames spread quickly, aided by the low humidity and northeast wind, conditions that favored the advance of the front and made immediate intervention necessary.
The rescue efforts
The regional forest fire fighting machine was activated within minutes: three helicopters from the regional fleet and ten teams of AIB volunteers were sent to the site, engaged in containing the fire and securing the area. The affected area is characterized by mixed oak and coniferous woods, “with a dense undergrowth that makes extinguishing more complex and increases the risk of spread,” explains the Region in a statement. Precisely because of the nature of the vegetation and the evolution of the fire, an assessment is underway on the possible dispatch of additional teams and aircraft, in order to strengthen the intervention device and prevent an expansion of the fire.
