Weather in Tuscany, the violent greeting of summer: temperatures drop, thunderstorms and extreme phenomena – The forecast

The scorching heat has its days numbered. But the summer in Tuscany will continue. Let’s say it will be a “normal” summer. But let’s go in order. On the morning of Friday, August 14, the Tuscany Weather Center released a new and detailed analysis on the evolution of the heat and instability expected between Ferragosto and the end of August. A highly anticipated update, especially after a week that saw Tuscany record peaks of 39-40 degrees, with conditions of severe discomfort and widespread tropical nights. The analysis describes a scenario in which the African anticyclone finally shows the first signs of weakening, paving the way for a change that, while not bringing coolness, promises at least a respite from extreme temperatures.

The temperature drop

Let’s start with the temperatures. The Tuscany Weather Center explains: “It will still be very hot on Friday, August 14 and Saturday, August 15 while from Sunday, August 16 we will start to lose a few degrees. On average, the temperature drop between these days and next Monday will be 7 degrees. We will therefore go from the current 39-40° to 32-34° maximum temperature. It will not be cool, but it will certainly be more livable.” The Tuscany Weather Center thus confirms that the most extreme phase of the heatwave is about to end. The drop will not be immediate, but gradual: a transition from 40 degrees to more “human” values, still above the average for the period.

Back to sleeping at night

After tropical nights that made rest difficult, especially in urban areas, the return of minimum temperatures below 20 degrees is an important sign. It is not cool, but a more livable condition that breaks the continuity of the sultriness. “From the morning of Tuesday, August 18 minimum temperatures will also drop – says the Cmt analysis – which will return almost everywhere below 20 degrees. So some nighttime relief will arrive.”

No new intense heatwave on the horizon

According to the Tuscany Weather Center, next week – the one starting August 17 – could see some warmer days, with local peaks up to 35 degrees, but without the return of 40. A sign that confirms how the African anticyclone is losing strength, although still present. “Another positive thing from a thermal point of view – the Cmt explains – is that we do not see new intense heatwaves. We have some undulations in the middle of next week but probably attributable more to prefrontal conditions rather than new heatwaves.”

The first thunderstorms: the anticyclone loses strength

Having clarified the temperature chapter, the Tuscany Weather Center shifts attention to precipitation. “In the inland areas – the Cmt explains – there is already some instability for the afternoon of Sunday, August 16 when the first thunderstorms could occur. Not widespread, but locally strong and as always unpredictable except a few hours before.” Inland Tuscany will be the first to see signs of change: scattered thunderstorms, not organized, but potentially intense. A dynamic already observed in recent days, with sudden and localized phenomena.

Monday: unstable passage across the entire region

The worsening on Monday, August 17 could be the most significant of the week, with heavy rains in the inland areas and some showers also along the coast. It is not a lasting breakdown, but a clear sign: summer is changing pace. “On Monday there is a first unstable passage that should cross the entire region with possible significant accumulations – explains the Cmt – in the inland areas where 40/50 millimeters could be reached. Less so along the coast where some rain should fall anyway.”

Break on the weekend of August 23-25

The second half of the week will be characterized by afternoon instability, especially in the inland areas. The following weekend (August 23-25, editor’s note) could bring a more widespread worsening, but the forecast still needs confirmation. “In the following days – the Cmt continues – we do not see significant precipitation peaks but there is still some ‘movement’. A new more ‘democratic’ thunderstorm break is possible on the weekend of August 23-25, but still to be confirmed.”

The endless summer is coming to an end

The Tuscany Weather Center announces it bluntly: the exceptional phase of summer 2026 is about to end. It is not the end of the season, but the end of the anomaly. “In summary, the endless summer with 40° and all the same days is coming to an end. Another 48-72 hours and then it will be a memory. Clearly – the Cmt specifies – summer will not end. Summer will continue but within normal standards.”

The real problem

The analysis also includes a significant point explaining that it is not the lack of rain, but the territory’s ability to retain it that is missing. With temperatures 2.5 degrees above average, evaporation is faster, drought more intense, fire risk higher, and thunderstorms more violent. “The real anomaly of these years is the much warmer temperatures than normal and not the absence of rain. In many cases, the rain is the same as before or even greater. The real problem is the temperatures,” explains the Cmt, concluding: “Temperatures 2.5 degrees above average trigger very different phenomena, in addition to increasingly strong thunderstorms and the risk of hailstorms and violent wind gusts due to thermal energy clearly higher than in the past.”
