New alert
The situation will remain unstable tomorrow as well, Friday the 18th, and for this reason a new yellow alert has been issued. During the night and in the early morning hours, isolated thunderstorms may occur between the Archipelago and the central coast. Between late morning and afternoon, thunderstorms may sporadically affect the central and southern inland areas. Average accumulations between 10 and 20 millimeters are expected, with maximums up to 50-80 millimeters and hourly intensities that may reach 30-50 millimeters. Friday’s thunderstorms will probably be more localized, but it is not excluded that they may be locally intense.
School evacuated in Viareggio
The bad weather is causing major disruptions in Viareggio: a lightning strike reportedly hit the Puccini schools in Torre del Lago, with 122 children at home while electricians are working to repair the damage. Flooding in much of the city, with the Promenade having to postpone the weekly market due to the inability of vendors to work as usual.
Empoli: «Rare phenomenon»
The thunderstorm that hit Empoli was particularly intense: widespread disruptions and flooding. Civil Protection: «The city of Empoli was affected by a particularly rare meteorological phenomenon: 43 mm of rain fell in half an hour in a confined area, an event without recent parallels. It will be necessary to wait at least an hour for the water to continue its flow into the sewer channels. Citizens are asked to pay the utmost attention, not to travel unless absolutely necessary, and not to use underpasses or roads blocked off due to flooding.»

New thunderstorms between Volterrano, Chianti and Aretino
Other thunderstorms could develop during the day in the Volterrano area, with subsequent movement towards Chianti and Aretino.
The day therefore appears particularly unstable on the meteorological front: the possibility of locally intense phenomena is not excluded, especially between Fiorentino and Senese.
For this reason, caution is advised when traveling, especially in areas affected by the passage of thunderstorms.
