PALERMO. The Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office of Palermo has opened a file to assess the parental responsibility of the mother and father of the 4-year-old girl who died Thursday from suspected diphtheria in the Sicilian capital.

The decision to investigate them, on charges of manslaughter, was made after investigators found that the couple’s four children were not vaccinated by choice. In recent days, the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office has questioned the doctors as well as the child’s pediatrician.

Meanwhile, the girl’s little cousin tested positive for diphtheria: the child is hospitalized at the Children’s Hospital. His condition is improving. “He is clinically improving,” said the medical director of the Civico health company, Domenico Cipolla. “We are keeping him under observation and isolation and monitoring all clinical functions.”
