Diesel excise duty, new extension of discounts coming: gasoline also under scrutiny

Another extension of discounts on diesel excise duties is underway, while technicians and majority forces study the selective aid announced by the government. The current measure enacted by the government last Thursday that reduces the cost of diesel by 17 cents expires in two days: the idea being considered is to enact another similar intervention for 7-10 days. The short duration would be justified by the extreme uncertainty of the geopolitical scenario affecting fuel prices.

Gasoline price increases

Gasoline is also under observation, excluded so far from this round of discounts, but its increases – today the average price is 2.120 euros per liter in the city and 2.212 euros on the highway – are quite worrying, so it is not excluded that intervention may also be needed on this front. The wait would also allow for a more precise definition of the scenario in which to operate for economic interventions, given that on September 22 it will be known whether the deficit/GDP ratio will remain above or below the 3% threshold that decides the exit from the European infringement procedure. A variable that will affect the resources the government will have available to ease the burden of rising fuel prices and, in general, for the budget maneuver to be outlined in mid-October.

How much the price increases impact

At current diesel prices, the expenditure for diesel refueling (assuming two full tanks per month) rises in Italy by almost +695 euros annually per car compared to the average diesel prices in effect in 2025. This is stated by Adusbef, which has made projections on motorists’ pump expenses considering the new records reached by fuels. If current price lists are compared with the average price of gasoline and diesel recorded in 2025, the annual expenditure for gasoline refueling is higher by 465.6 euros annually per car – analyzes Adusbef – Considering the number of gasoline-powered cars circulating in our country, the total increased expenditure reaches +7.9 billion euros. For diesel, instead, the annual expenditure per single car, always assuming two full tanks per month, compared to the 2025 average rises by as much as 694.8 euros annually, equal to an increase of +11.5 billion euros on the total diesel cars circulating in Italy. Current pump prices, therefore, if not effectively countered, would result in a potential blow to Italian families of a total of 19.4 billion euros annually on gasoline and diesel refueling, which would have cascading effects on budgets, purchasing power, and consumption, and disastrous repercussions on the national economy.
