SPEZIA. A vast deployment of means and personnel has been in action since the evening of Saturday, August 15 off Porto Venere to find a 21-year-old boy missing at sea during a dinghy outing with some friends on Ferragosto day. The fall into the water, which occurred in a stretch very frequented by boaters, immediately triggered the alarm and the activation of a massive rescue operation. According to what has been reconstructed, the young man was thrown out of the dinghy while the group was passing through the Rosse area, a stretch of coast known for the influx of boats and vessels. From that moment he has not resurfaced, raising fears of the worst and pushing the authorities to deploy every available resource.

Sea, sky and coast monitored
For hours fifty operators belonging to various state bodies have been combing the stretch of sea between the Gulf of La Spezia and the Cinque Terre. In the water, units of the coast guard, the navy, the fire brigade, the state police, the carabinieri, the finance police and the mountain rescue are engaged, coordinated in a single search strategy. Alongside the institutional means, some private boats have also joined, made available by boaters who decided to contribute to the operations. A sign of the strong participation of the local community, shaken by the news of the young man’s disappearance. Meanwhile, helicopters continuously fly over the area, searching from above for any useful element: a floating object, a suspicious movement, a trace that could guide the teams at sea. The sea conditions and the complexity of the area make the search particularly delicate.
The command post in Porto Venere: family and friends waiting
An advanced command post has been set up in the small port of Porto Venere, the operational heart of the entire device. Here communications between the teams at sea and those on land intersect, reports are analyzed and the next phases of the search are planned. Alongside the rescuers, the boy’s family and friends are also present at the command post, anxiously following every update. With them is the mayor Francesca Sturlese, who wanted to be present to support the family and closely monitor the evolution of the operations.

A race against time
The searches continue nonstop, with the aim of making use of every useful minute and every change in sea conditions. The complexity of the area, the presence of currents and the typical nautical traffic of Ferragosto make the rescuers’ work particularly demanding.
