Alessandro Di Battista has left Cuba to return to Italy. The former parliamentarian and activist was on the island to carry out a report when he was struck by severe headaches and hospitalization became necessary.
The surgical intervention
Last week, precisely on the day he was supposed to return to Rome, his condition required emergency surgery. Di Battista was then transferred and operated on at the Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Hermanos Ameijeiras in Havana, where he remained hospitalized until departure.
The green light
The return to Italy was only possible after the final checks and the green light from the Cuban doctors who followed him during these days. The family, which maintained the utmost discretion about the matter, had asked to limit the spread of information to a minimum. His partner Sahra joined him in Cuba, along with his friend Luca Di Giuseppe, president of the Schierarsi association.
In the first days of hospitalization, Di Battista continued to communicate through social media, responding to the numerous messages received after the news of his illness. He also maintained contact with friends and acquaintances, including some former comrades from the political battles related to the Five Star Movement.
The post from friend Di Giuseppe
The departure was officially announced by Luca Di Giuseppe himself through a message on social media: «Safe return, my brother. See you in Rome in a few hours». The post also included a photograph of the plane that will accompany Di Battista to Italy.
Di Giuseppe also expressed thanks to the Cuban doctors who took care of the former parliamentarian during his hospital stay, highlighting the difficult period just passed.
