September has arrived. But the heat remains. And it is destined to be felt again in its hottest side. Especially in Tuscany. But the change of season is near. And within a few days the situation seems destined to change profoundly. But let’s go in order.
The situation
«Still hot in Tuscany although with characteristics that for the moment are much more “normal” compared to last week». The latest analysis from the Centro Meteo Toscana, released on Wednesday, September 2, confirms that the region continues to deal with high temperatures, but with less extreme intensity than in previous days. Experts remind that the persistence of the heat is mainly linked to the thermal surplus accumulated in recent months, a factor that continues to influence atmospheric conditions.
More bearable lows thanks to the Azores anticyclone
«The Azores anticyclone has then given us much more bearable lows in recent days, with values almost everywhere below 20° degrees and generally 6/8° degrees lower than last week», explains Centro Meteo Toscana. The return of a more “classic” anticyclonic regime has allowed a drop in nighttime temperatures, improving the perception of heat and offering some relief after days of persistent muggy weather.
Between Thursday and Saturday a new thermal rise
«Heat that will however increase between Thursday, September 3 and Saturday, September 5 – continues the Cmt analysis – due to the last North African breath that will try in every way to rise north but which, due to the seasonal advance, will no longer have the vehemence of past weeks». Centro Meteo Toscana predicts a new increase in temperatures, with values that for September will be particularly high: «For September though, we will experience three really hot days, with possible peaks up to 35/36° degrees even in Tuscany». A short but intense wave, destined to mark the last days of significant heat of the season.

The change of pace
«There are confirmations of a decisive change of pace starting from the end of the first ten days (September 9 or 10) with the decisive entry of cooler air from the North Atlantic and the definitive end of the current heat». According to the Centro Meteo Toscana, the arrival of North Atlantic currents should bring a marked thermal drop: «A thermal drop of several degrees is expected, probably between 6 and 8° degrees both in maximum and minimum values». The passage of some disturbed fronts, still to be evaluated in detail, could be followed by grecale and tramontana winds, bringing the region back to values more appropriate for the season.
The curiosity
«One data stands out that will need to be analyzed well in the coming days and that will probably disappoint or surprise many». The Cmt highlights a surprising aspect: «That is, to date, none of the decades of this very hot summer has reached record values». An anomaly that contrasts with what happened in previous summers, all characterized by thermal records: «Which on the contrary had been done in all 4 previous summers, with records registered in July (both in 2022 and 2025) and in August (both in 2023 and 2024)». There remains one last chance for summer 2026 to make its mark: «To exceed 38.2° in the coming days to beat the record of the first ten days of September which dates back to September 1949».
A complex summer to interpret
«We will definitely delve into why a record or almost record summer like the current one can manage to not break any peak thermal record. The atmosphere – concludes the Cmt – as we always say is much more complex than people think».
