The alarm was raised shortly before 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, when a couple in the water began to have difficulties. The lifeguard immediately jumped in to reach the two.
First the rescue of the woman
The first intervention was successful. The lifeguard managed to reach the woman and bring her back to the beach, where she arrived in conditions that would not cause particular concern.
But the husband was still in the water: the 62-year-old then decided to return to the sea in an attempt to rescue him.

The second intervention ends in tragedy
During the attempt to reach and bring the man back to shore, however, something went wrong. The lifeguard and the 66-year-old were no longer able to return to shore and died despite the intervention of rescuers.
According to an initial hypothesis, still under investigation, the lifeguard may have suffered a sudden illness after the effort made during the rescue.
The rescue operations and investigations
On site, the White Cross medical personnel intervened, the Coast Guard, engaged in investigations and surveys, and the local police, who arrived to support the operations. There was nothing to be done for the lifeguard and the 66-year-old tourist. Investigations are now underway to reconstruct in detail the sequence of events and clarify precisely the causes of the double tragedy that occurred in the waters of Andora.
