Do you feel like having a coffee while you are in Bolzano? It will cost you one euro and 50 cents. You will spend slightly less in Pescara, Ferrara, Belluno, or Ravenna.
These are the data collected by the Training and Research Center on Consumption (Crc) which, in collaboration with Assoutenti, has carried out a new study on the rising cost of coffee cups analyzing the price increases of coffee at bars during 2026.
According to the research, an espresso today costs in Italy almost a quarter more than five years ago and based on official Mimit data, the average cost in Italy is 1.29 euros, 25 cents more than in 2021.
However, the increase is not due to the cost of raw materials. According to the Crc, the burden lies with energy and management costs borne by bars.
Bolzano confirms itself as the city with the highest price, equal to 1.51 euros per cup, followed by Pescara with 1.49 euros, but in total as many as 11 provinces have reached or exceeded the psychological threshold of 1.4 euros per coffee (Ferrara, Belluno, Ravenna, Trieste, Parma, Trento, Padua, Treviso, and Udine).
Messina is currently the cheapest city, with an average price of 1.06 euros, followed closely by Catanzaro (1.08 euros); together with Aosta, Syracuse, Varese, Rome, and Pistoia, they are the only provinces with a price below 1.20 euros.
However, if you analyze the trend of coffee prices at bars over the last 5 years, you discover that the heaviest increase occurred in Pescara, where the price per cup rose by +49% compared to 2021, followed by Parma (+41%), Bari (+39.5%), and the home of coffee, Naples (+37.8%).
