PISTOIA. Poet, storyteller, witness of an evolving Italy. A great void opens up in the panorama of Italian culture. He died on the morning of Thursday, August 6, in his home in Pavana, on the mountain in the province of Pistoia, the place he had chosen as a refuge and root, Francesco Guccini. He was 86 years old. Beside him were his wife Raffaella, his daughter Teresa and his closest family members. The family announced the news asking that the mourning be lived with the utmost privacy: the funeral will be held in the coming days and will be exclusively private, as per the singer-songwriter’s wishes.
A commemoration in September
While maintaining the requested discretion, the family announced that a public ceremony will be organized in September, allowing those who have followed him for decades to say goodbye and remember him. A gesture intended for the many who found in his words a travel companion.
The beginnings: teacher, journalist, then music
Before becoming one of the symbols of Italian singer-songwriter music, Guccini traveled other paths: teaching English, journalism, writing. Music arrived in the Sixties, when he released his first album, Folk Beat n.1 (1967). In those tracks already appear the themes that would accompany him throughout his life: civil commitment, criticism of power, memory of the past.
The years of consecration
Between the Seventies and Eighties Guccini signed some of his most famous works: Radici, Via Paolo Fabbri 43, Amerigo. These are records that place him among the greatest interpreters of Italian singer-songwriter music. His songs become a mirror of a changing country: La locomotiva, Dio è morto, L’avvelenata enter the collective heritage as generational anthems.
The narrative voice: novels, stories, essays
Alongside music, Guccini cultivated a rich and personal literary production. He published novels, memoirs, and essays often set in his Apennines, helping to fix the history and culture of the territory. Among the best-known works are Cròniche Epafàniche, Vacca d’un cane and the mysteries written with Loriano Macchiavelli.

The latest musical projects
In 2012 L’ultima Thule was released, an album that marked a turning point in his career. Three years later he returned to sing as a guest in the song Le storie che non conosci by Samuele Bersani and Pacifico, a charity initiative dedicated to blind children. In 2019 came Note di viaggio – Capitolo 1, a project curated by Mauro Pagani in which great artists reinterpret twelve songs from his repertoire. The album opens with Natale a Pavana, sung by Guccini in the Pavana dialect. In 2022 he published Canzoni da intorto, followed the following year by Canzoni da osteria, two albums that bring his voice back to the center of the scene.
The memory of Giani
“Farewell to Francesco Guccini. With deep sorrow, one of the most authentic voices of Italian culture and singer-songwriter music leaves us. His words told generations, giving voice to the values of freedom, memory, justice, and humanity.” This was written on his Instagram profile by the President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani. “For Tuscany, his name will remain indissolubly linked to Pavana, the village in the Pistoia Apennines that he chose as home and transformed into a place of the soul, making it the protagonist of unforgettable pages of his music and narrative – added Giani -. His songs will continue to accompany us, because great artists never really leave us: they continue to live in the emotions they know how to convey. Thank you for everything, Francesco!”
The tribute from the Chamber
The news of his death also reached Montecitorio, where the Chamber dedicated an applause to the singer-songwriter. The PD group leader Chiara Braga remembered Guccini as “a poet capable of uniting generations and telling our time,” proposing an official commemoration in September. The request received bipartisan support. The acting president, Anna Ascani, expressed the institution’s condolences to the family.
