It is 14:11, she has been traveling locked in the trunk of her Audi for eight minutes. Vella kidnapped her by ambushing her in the garage under her building on via Panciatichi, tied her up and beat her until she lost consciousness. He realizes she is talking, brakes, gets out and opens the trunk. Lorena tries to convince him to stop. «I love you, let’s get back together».
Federico does not listen to her, looks at her, closes the trunk, gets back in the car and accelerates. The call to 112 from the 45-year-old pharmaceutical manager started at 14:03. Confused, still dazed from the blows to the head. «My ex kidnapped me, beat me and immobilized me».
The phone
The phone was in her backpack, the one he had carelessly thrown in with her. She speaks in a low voice. «Where are you going?», the operator asks. «I don’t know, I left ten minutes ago». But it’s not so. The ride continues and the trunk will open again eleven minutes later, at 14:22, on the viaduct. Vella snatches the phone from her hand, grabs her and throws her down, in a hopeless fall.
The father and the friend
Before those twenty minutes Lorena had already tried to end the relationship. Her father Franco had told her to report him. «The night before the femicide on the phone until one o’clock, I told her to report him but she was hopeful that things would be resolved», he said.
Samanta, the friend, had also begged her to go to the authorities. Lorena was afraid. After the breakup, calls and messages became more and more insistent, persecutory; the words did not reach the explicit death threat, but became heavy, allusive. It was she who left Vella in August, after discovering through chats the numerous betrayals. At the gym, where they met, he had shown possessive behavior: if a man approached Lorena he could become aggressive. «You have already replaced me», he said to her. Signs that alarmed those around her, without ever turning into a complaint, a lawsuit or a report to the authorities.
The investigations
Now the Florence prosecutor’s office is mainly looking for what happened before 14:03. The most accredited investigative hypothesis is premeditation. Vella would have prepared the attack, bringing with him what he might need.
In the underground garage he would have covered the photocells of the gate with adhesive tape to prevent it from closing and waited for the return of his ex-partner. When she got out of the car he attacked her. A blow to the head, perhaps the impact against the wall: traces of blood remained on the walls and floor. Then the ties on wrists and ankles and the body loaded into the trunk.
In Vella’s car, left in Rifredi, the Mobile Squad found a bag of electrician’s ties, scissors and a long sheet. Letters and notes exchanged between the two were also seized during searches, now under investigation along with the phones.
The prosecutor explained that the checks are needed to precisely reconstruct the preparation of the ambush, the dynamics and what happened in the weeks following the separation. The autopsy, scheduled at Careggi for tomorrow, will also have to determine if Lorena was still alive when she was thrown from the viaduct.
The last minutes
There, after throwing her, Federico posts his farewell on Instagram. «Goodbye to all». Then he takes the phone again. He writes to Lorena’s mother: «She is dead». He calls his own: «I killed her». The officers are already on the Panoramica, the negotiation begins to prevent him from jumping. A few minutes earlier, from the darkness of the trunk, Lorena had tried to build with words a way out: a life together she no longer wanted, promised only to stay alive. A bridge of words.
